What I’m Reading Right Now

June 6, 2023June 8, 2023 by Ruth Baker

I came to Christianity late. In real terms, I met Jesus in God’s own time. But in terms of my temporal existence, I was already in my 30s and, as a young Christian, I felt really behind in understanding the church, church history, theology, how we…

Simplicity is Best

May 11, 2023May 10, 2023 by Ruth Baker

I often feel like such a completely useless mother. In my mind I should be beatifically teaching my angelic children from a variety of devotions, all age appropriate, all leading sequentially from one to the other and all working like a dream. The…

Supporting Christian mums returning to paid work

February 2, 2023February 2, 2023 by Ruth Baker

September 21, 2021September 21, 2021 by Ruth Baker

Memories can feel like a series of hazy vignettes—snippets of people, places, conversations and feelings. In my case, it’s a two-up-two-down in the north of England and playing with the other kids in the street. A gap year in Ireland, goat herding…

What I pray for my kids – with Ruth Baker

April 29, 2021April 29, 2021 by Ruth Baker

I have a Christopher Robin and a Tigger. My eldest son is mild, kind and wise. My younger son bounces around and never stops. I thank God for them daily, even when one is being the Minister for Justice and the other is being a crazy stuntman. Among…

Where I go when faith feels dry

April 22, 2021April 22, 2021 by Ruth Baker

I don’t always see it coming. But some days just creep up on me where I know my faith feels lacking. Not absent—just sucked of its life. Dry, dusty, like Miss Havisham’s dining room. Sometimes it happens when I’ve let life get in the way: work, parenting…
